why is carbon a non metal

As it doesn't not have the characteristic of a metal nor a metalloid, it's black, not shiny, it's brittle, not malleable, carbon itself does not conduct electricity, (although it's allotropes may) while metals do conduct, and allotropes of carbon aren't bad at heat conductivity, while all metals are good conductors. So it is considered as non metal.
