Why is carbon able to form large complex molecules?

Due to its Ability of bonding with itself known as CATENATION [ Self linking ability of atom ( here Carbon) ]

since it has valency 4 it can neither gain and nor loose electrons. So it combines with various elements to become stable. Hence, complex molecules are formed
