atomic size down a group of the periodic table you will notice that it increases(due to increase in a shell in each successive element). Thus carbon has a larger electronegativity than silicon as it has a larger nuclear pull over the the valence electrons and the bond pair in a molecule. This allows carbon to catenate or self-link with other carbon atoms, which allows it to form an infinite long chain of carbon atoms and form more compounds.

✒✒carbon is the only atom which has millions of bonds but why not silicon and germanium where there valencies are same as carbon...as

(1) Tetravalency.

carbon has the valency of 4. it makes bonds with monovalent hydrocarbon and with oxygen, sulphur, hydrogen etc.it can form single, double, triple bonds. It can form chains, branches and rings.

(2) Catenation

Catenation is the property of carbon to form long chains. it is highly reactive and found in abundance around us.
