why is carbon used for extraction of metals

Hey...
Extraction using carbon. Metals such as zinc, iron and copper are present in ores as their oxides. Each of these oxides is heated with carbon to obtain the metal. The metal oxide loses oxygen, and is therefore reduced.

carbon has more efficiency towards oxygen than metals at middle of activity series .thus it is used to displace metal from its metal oxide ,only metals at middle of activity series
