Casparian strips are impervious to water because they are made up of substances like Suberin, lignin, cutin which does not allow water to pass through.

swetapadmamarndi: i know the composition.. but why are these impervious to water..
Poorva15: These are waterproofing waxy substances.
swetapadmamarndi: do other materials except water pass through it..?? if yes.. then how.. pls explain.. i wanna know
Poorva15: No other material also do not pass through it. By the it depends on amount of deposition. Sometimes Suberin act as a filter which let water and low molecular substances to pass through it.

As poorva said, the barrel shaped cells of endodermis of some plants in the root region is deposited with suberin on the radial and tangential walls so that it is impermeable to water and all substances have to pass through living cells so that unwanted substances could be rejected and the rest transported.
