In a galvanic (voltaic) cell, the anode is considered negative and the cathode is considered positive. However, the reaction is still similar, whereby electrons from the anode flow to the positive terminal of the battery, and electrons from the battery flow to the cathode.

Answer:at anode electron must be removed from the species because oxidation does not occur spontaneously,at cathode electron must be supplied to do reduction hence anode must be positive and cathode must be negative so that the electrons are efficiently pulled out of anode and pushed into the cathode.
