Cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life because all living beings develop from a pre-existing cell. It is the only basic unit of an organism and thus called as the fundamental, structural and functional unit of life.

because everything in this world is made up of cells weather living or non living
it is both structural and functional unit and everything is made up of cells because it is the smallest living thing
