Answer
It is called structural unit of life because any structure that is not in the cellular form or is subcellular alone cannot be living and is not capable of an independent existence. Only cells or cellular structures are capable of claiming living status. Cell is called functional unit of life because apart from a few functions most of the functions required to sustain life is performed inside the cell. Metabolic activities that release energy for our body take place in the cells and non cellular structures are not able to generate energy from food sources. I have just mentioned one function but there are several other function that a cell performs and is necessary for life.
