It has more moderating than hot climate.
It is located near the ocean (i.e on eastern coast of India in south) thus experiences very less range of temperature change in climate than cities which are not located on coast experiencing continentality effect and have higher annual range of temperature.
so around the year range of temperature is lesser than other cities located in landlocked region where there is extreme summer and extreme winter.
Also the latitudinal location of the city determines its climate, same works in case of Chennai (closer to equator more days with overhead sun around the year) in comparison with other cities located away from equator.
Both the reasons together gives Chennai a moderate climate.
