Why is chloride shift required during respiration?

chlorine shift is required during respiration because some parts of Co2 is transported from the tissue to the lungs by this method only.....so this process plays very important role in exchange of gases....

CO2 must be moved through the blood to the lungs to be exhausted to the atmosphere (physiologicalrespiration). ... The bicarbonate (HCO3-) building up in the RBCs is exchanged for chloride ions (Cl-) in the blood plasma (chloride shift), leaving the acidic hydrogen ions (H+) in the cells, and out of the plasma.
