because the gametes fuse to restore the most.ploidy number ie diploid

It is done so,so that on fertilization the normal chromosome number is maintained.Look, a child gets half the no. of chromosomes from his father and the other half(haploid) from his mother.So on the fertilization of the two,the normal diploid number will be restored.
