During smoking, the cigarette fumes make the walls of alveoli very thin which causes rupturing of alveoli. This reduces the surface area for gaseous exchange in lungs. To make up for the reduced gaseous exchange, the heart has to pump more blood. This over-burdening of the heart may cause heart failure.
