Coal is ready to be burned coming right out of the ground. You can build a power plant near the mine and save on the transportation cost, since it's cheaper to transport electricity then bulk coal.

harshit2012: Coal is a ready-to-use fuel after mines out of the ground. So, a power plant can be built near the mine as it saves time and transportation cost. Moreover, it's also cheaper to transport electricity then bulk coal.

Oil has to be refined before use and upon refining, it yields multiple products. It's cheaper, therefore, to transport crude oil

Oil has to be refined before it can be used. When the crude oil is refined, it yields multiple products, and each one has to be kept separate form the other products. It's cheaper, therefore, to transport crude oil and refine it near the end user rather then transporting the distillates separately.
