why is coal subjected to destructive distillation ,rather than burning directly

When you distill coal, wood or any other material you want to get something out of it, but this material will react with the oxygen in the air, you just remove the oxygen. That’s why coal distillation is done under limited presence of oxygen.

And as you know, without oxygen (or other oxidizing agent), combustion cannot occur.

That’s why the coal being destructively distilled does not burn.

EDIT: I just figured out that my answer might not have responded the question the way OP wanted.

Coal is distilled because there are many useful chemical products that can be obtained by distillation and sold for good profit. Also, the coke (residual coal) is much more useful at metallurgy
