A computer is a device that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically. Modern computers have the ability to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers to perform an extremely wide range of tasks.

Computers or calculators? . The machines that we call computers have different, much more complex tasks than their early prototypes. In the beginning of the twentieth century came the idea to make a machine which would do mathematic calculations. First, they were very rough and yet the size of several rooms. They were very complicated and the best of them could do merely half the things what a modern pocket calculator can do. Starting with the 60s and 70s, the difference was clear. Calculators pretty much took their shape back then, while computers we use today have been radically transformed through the years. Basically, they're super-fast calculators, but their calculation processing power is used in other, much complicated purposes (you can't write an e-mail on your pocket calculator, can you?) including calculating. So, the name 'computers' have little to do with their purpose, but yet more with their origin.
