Because it reacts with the air and water in the surrounding and rusting takes place..

In monsoon season when copper is exposed to carbon dioxide and oxygen and water it gets corroded and copper hydroxide (Cu(OH)2) is formed along with basic copper carbonate (CuCO3) which gives it the green color.
