Why is corruption considered a social crime?

Who is harmed by corruption? Society as a whole. When a public official takes a bribe from the mob to award a building contract, tax money is being paid to criminals who may cut corners on safety. So the public is endangered, the criminals profit, and some legitimate business lost out on the contract. The public loses faith in their elected and appointed officials, and in the system itself.

If that’s not enough harm for you, consider corruption on a much larger scale: a foreign government wants to influence or control your country. They can’t directly pay money to a candidate or for election ads, so they give money to people around the candidate, or funnel money through political action committees. The foreigners arrange very lucrative business deals (which appear legitimate on the surface) which end up profiting the candidate, so that he is favorably disposed toward the foreign nation. Finally, the foreign government’s agents engage in a widespread and coordinated public media campaign designed to influence the election in this candidate’s favor. The result: the foreign nation now has corrupt influence over the elected leader of your country. Your leader will act in their interests, rather than the country’s interest
