Lower labour costs at centres like Ujjain, Bharuch, Agra, Hathras, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli also caused industries to be located away from cotton producing areas. Thus, the cotton textile industry is located in almost every state in India, where one or more of the locational factors have been favourable.

Traditionally, the cotton industry in India was largely concentrated in cotton-growing areas of the peninsula, Like Gujarat (Surat), Maharashtra(Mumbai).
These areas had advantages of proximity to the market, capital facility, cheap labour, proximity to port facility and favourable humid climate.
