why is cotton used to make wricks and mops?

Cotton in actual is 90-% cellulose, Cellulose is a polymer which makes the cotton absorbing furthermore cotton is negatively charged and attracts the dipole* water molecules thus cotton fibres are hydrophilic in nature and because of the sponging action cotton is used to make wicks and mops.
