Democracy is preferred in modern times because of the following reasons:  

1) Right to equality: It is one of the "fundamental rights" which guarantees that all people will be "treated equally irrespective" of caste, colour, gender etc.  

2) Right to expression of speech: People have the right to express their views and opinion. Though they have to exercise this right with constraints yet they have a say in the "decision making process" and a voice that is heard. In countries like "North Korea", people cannot say a word against the government or else they will have to face dire consequences.
