Density is called a derived unit because it is not reported as a pure unit (a pure unit would be something like kilograms or meters).
Hope it helps u!!

First of all,
Derived unit is a unit which involves two or more fundamental units.
Now coming to density,
Density= Mass/Volume
Unit of density = unit of mass/unit of volume
Unit of density= kg/m^3
As you can see, the unit of density is made up of unit of mass and volume, that is a fundamental unit and another derived unit.
If anything is not clear, feel free to ask.
