Why is density high in an ionic bond and low in a covalent bond?

Apparently a high electronegativity atom withdraws nearly the whole electron density so it has high density.Eg-Cl
Covalent bonds are directional in nature and hence they have to form certain patterns and atoms can't bond to every atom in direction,so not so close packed.Eg-VSEPR
