Why is detergent better than soap in cleaning action?

Although, soap is a good cleaning agent, its cleaning capacity is reduced when used in hard water. Syntheticdetergents are used in the case of hard water also because the calcium and magnesium salts of detergentsare soluble in water. Detergents are more soluble than soaps and hence form more lather than soaps.

It detergent forms lot of lather even with hard water . Hard water contains ions which react with soap to form insoluble salts of calcium and magnesium called scum and soap goes waste . Detergents do not form insoluble compounds with ions therefore these are more effective.
