detergent is better than soap in cleaning action because detergents are the ammonium and sulphonic salts of long chain fatty acids and can form foam in hard water also whereas when soap is added to hard water the the magnesium/calcium react with soap and form an insoluble substance called skum rather than foam

Answer:

It detergent forms lot of lather even with hard water . Hard water contains ions which react with soap to form insoluble salts of calcium and magnesium called scum and soap goes waste . Detergents do not form insoluble compounds with ions therefore these are more effective.
