Explanation:

Diamond is an allotrope of Carbon.

Carbon ( Atomic Number-6) is a non metal..

As diamond is made up of only carbon it's considered as a non metal, even though it's hardest material..

Similarly Na being softest is still a metal because of its physical properties..

Generally for classification chemical properties are taken as reference

Diamond is a non metal. Diamond is not a metal in anyway its just an allotrope of carbon. It does not show any physical properties or chemical properties of metalslike electrical conductivity, malleability, ductility, reaction with acids or salts etc.

Metals are generally hard. but all hard objects cannot be metals. The hardness of diamond comes due to the tetrahedral structure of diamond!! Carbon element is a non metal and even though diamond in the hardest substance known,it is an allotrope of carbon and thus is A NON METAL.
