Diamond has a giant molecular structure. Each carbon atom is covalently bonded to four other carbon atoms. A lot of energy is needed to separate the atoms indiamond. This is because covalent bonds are strong, anddiamond contains very many covalent bonds.

The heat and pressure causes the diamond molecules to change so that they're so close together, the molecules can't move(covalent bonding). The closeness of these molecules forms a rigid bond, therefore making the diamond hard.
