Why is diamond transparent,and graphite black even when they are made of the same atoms?

It has to do with the kind of carbon atom bonding .
in diamond there are 4 covalent bonds
Since Diamonds only have single bonds, and so they don’t absorb at all in the visible spectrum. Instead all the light is refracted and reflected.
Graphite contains a virtually infinite array of aromatic rings (a lot of conjugation), and so absorbs throughout the visible spectrum. Since all light is absorbed grpahite is black and opaque
