Multicellular organisms such as humans possess complex body designs. They have specialised cells and tissues for performing various necessary functions of the body such as intake of food and oxygen. Unlike unicellular organisms, multicellular cells are not in direct contact with the outside environment. Therefore, diffusion cannot meet their oxygen requirements.

- In Multicellular organism, all the cells are not in direct contact with atmosphere.
- Diffusion only occurs when two mediums are in contact.
- But in our body many cells are inside our body.
- So in this case diffusion is not sufficient to meet the need of day to day work and metabolism and oxygen demand.
- Hence a complex respiratory as well as circulatory system along with tissues and specialised cells has been organised in higher multicellular organisms.
