If we talk about unicellular organisms or a few celled organisms diffusion is enough to meet their oxygen needs as whole of their body is in contact with the environment.

The case is different for multicellular organisms.

If talk about ourselves, we know that all of our cells are not in contact with the outer environment and are barred to it. So by the means of simple diffusion it would be difficult for the cells of our internal organ to meet with their O2 needs.

Therefore diffusion is insufficient to meet the O2 requirements of multicellular organisms.
