Diffusion is insufficient to meet the oxygen requirement of multicellular organisms like humans because in the multicellular organisms all the cells are not in direct contact with the surrounding environment.

Also, in multicellular organisms such as man, the volume of the human body is big and hence, oxygen cannot diffuse into all the cells of the human body quickly.Therefore, the diffusion is insufficient to meet the oxygen requirement in them . Instead , they need specialised cell organs for breathing and exchange of gases .
