The distribution of water on the Earth'ssurface is extremely uneven. Only 3% of wateron the surface is fresh; the remaining 97% resides in the ocean. Of freshwater, 69% resides in glaciers, 30% underground, and less than 1% is located in lakes, rivers and swamps.

The distribution of rainfall uneven in India due to the following reasons: Latitudinal extent: The tropical and coastal regions and plains receive more rainfall than the plateau and desert regions in the interior.

Relief and topography: The windward side of mountains and hills receive more rainfall than leeward side.

The vagaries of the monsoon:The unpredictability of the monsoon alongwith phenomena like monsoon troughs and depressions lead to uneven distribution of rainfall.
