When Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after winning the war with Ravana, the people of Ayodhya lit lamps and the city was lit during the night as if it was a day. From then we celebrate diwali by lighting lamps and burning fireworks. This is why it is called the festival of lights.

Diwali is called the festival of light because we burn crackers and light Diyas on that day. we cannot see this much light in any other festival.
