In the helical double-stranded DNA molecule, the sugar–phosphate backbone lies outside and the bases are inside. Base pairs are stacked and horizontal; hence they are perpendicular to the axis of DNA. Because of the stacked nature of the base pairs in DNA, spatially flat molecules can intercalate between them.
