Answer:

1. Kalam’s career started off with designing helicopters for the Indian army at DRDO but he didn’t feel like he was actually meant to do that. Also, in 1965 he had started working on an expandable rocket project independently at DRDO. In 1969, Kalam single-handedly got the government to expand his independent programme and include more engineers.

2. In 1969 came Kalam’s first stint with aerospace engineering.  He assumed the position of Project director of India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) at Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This vehicle launched the Rohini satellite in 1980.

3. Between the years 1970 and 1990, Kalam worked on developing the Polar Satellite Launching Vehicle (PSLV) and SLV-III projects. Both projects were a success.

4. Project Devil and Project Valiant where the 2 secret missile programs which primarily earned Kalam the alias ‘the Missile Man of India’. Both projects were top secret liquid-fueled missile projects developed by India under the directorship of Kalam and special permission by the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. These projects later served as the foundation in the development of ballistic missile Prithvi.

5. Then came the Rs 388 crore project named Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) which Kalam headed as the chief executive. It was under this project Kalam played a monumental part in developing supersonic missiles Agni, an intermediate range ballistic missile and Prithvi.

6. The Pokhran 2 nuclear tests were conducted between 1992 and 1999, and Kalam being the chief scientific advisor to the PM and secretary of defence, played an intensive political and technological role.
