Why is electoral competition healthy for a democracy?

Yes, competition plays an important part in any selection process. It surfaces all the pros and cons of an issue or proposal.  It can be conducted in a civil manner with respect for ideas and concerns, e.g., Roberts Rules of Order. In voting for persons, the competition for power can get ugly and personal, which is a major reason not to have elected representative democracy.
