Because there is a loss of voltage and energy while transmission over long distance. Usually, AC current is preferred over DC because in AC current the loss of energy is lower than in DC, and most importantly, It's less fatal (deadly) than DC current.

since long distance a high resistence will be there

so a high voltage is needed for overcoming it
and also if it is to provide electricity for house it also has overcome it also
