Hi there,

◇ Electrolysis of NaCl solution produces

● chlorine gas at anode

●` hydrogen gas at cathode

● Forming sodium hydroxide at cathode

◇ In industry its called electrolysis of brine

●Equations

☆At anode (+)

2Cl- => Cl2 + 2e

☆At cathode (-)

2H2O + 2e => H2 + 2OH

☆Total cathode equation

(2Na+) +2H2O=> H2 + (2Na+) + (2OH-)

☆The total process equation

2NaCl + 2H2O=> Cl2+H2+2NaOH

◇ Due to formation of chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide the process called chlor alkali process
