The process of endocytosis occurs only in the animal cells due to the following reasons:

Explanation:

  • Endocytosis can be described as the process of engulfing something inside a cell.

  • As we know, an animal cell lacks a cell wall so the cell membrane of an animal cell is in direct contact with the external environment.

  • Hence, it is possible for the cell membrane of an animal cell to engulf particles from the external environment.

  • Plant cells on the other hand have cell wall covering which does not support the process of endocytosis.

Answer:

Endocytosis is engulfment of food and other substances from external medium by plasma membrane. This is possible only when plasma membrane is in direct contact with external medium. It occurs only in animal cells. In plant cells, a cell wall is present over the plasma membrane. Therefore, their plasma membranes cannot perform endocytosis
