Answer:

Energy is consumed by the sleeping organism because the brain and vital organs function even if the organism sleeps.

Explanation:

Energy is is consumed by an organism even if it sleeps because its brain functions throughout the night. The respiration consumes a lot of energy to produce more energy for the body. The brain when it functions, also consumes a lot of blood (about 20-25%) to function properly. Our heart beats throughout the night to pump blood to our whole body, which also consumes energy. Our lungs help in exchange of gases in the blood. Our kidney purifies blood and seperates wastes like urea, uric acid, and ammonia. Our intestines help in metabolism of our body. All this consumes a lot of energy. The organism breathes, hears, senses the surrounding even if it sleeps. This also consumes some amount of energy.

It may seem like the organism does nothing when it sleeps. But, slow and subtle processes undergo inside it. That is why the organism urinate when it wakes up as the kidney separated wastes from the blood. That is why it feels hungry as the respiration consumed the energy to release more energy, and this energy gets used by other organs.

Hope this clears your doubt. Thanks!
