Answer:

During the British Colonization Period or as It’s more commonly known in India as “British Raj” (The British Rule) , English was being imposed on Indians as they would be able to understand and communicate with the government officials (the officials too understood it). It phased into the Indian system , but since India has more than 1000 languages , communication was a problem as not many spoke Hindi in areas except North and Middle India. English started to get used often so that the North & Mid Indians knew the language the South , East and West talked in. Hindi too was a viable option but long ago many rulers in India had their own languages and were imposing them.

English too now is one of the largest spoken language in India now along with Hindi as these two are the Official languages (India has no national language). Many Official government dossiers , documents and even the national exams are at least available in these two languages.

“We talk to people and we know them . Instead of calling someone different , we acknowledge our differences and the way we are different. When we live together with the respect for each other due to our differences , this is in fact what made us different.” (Vir Das)

After Indian Independence in 1947, Hindi was declared the first official language, and attempts were made to declare hindi the sole national language of India. Due to protests from Tamil Nadu and other non-Hindi-speaking states, it was decided to temporarily retain English for official purposes until at least 1965
