Why is equality one of the pillars of the democratic set up
Answers
t doesn’t have to be. Often democracy was restricted. Only the wealthy, the land owners, the powerful, could vote. In America only white men could vote in the early days. Equality was not considered a desirable goal of society. It took a civil war before progress was made in extending the right to vote, increasing equality. It wasn’t until 1920 that women were allowed to vote. The Civil Rights movement further strengthened liberal ideals in American society. However to this day there are many who are attempting to restrict voting. Equality is not a guarantee.
People realize that if one group’s rights can be restricted than anyone’s rights are vulnerable. Only if total equality is created and sustained can a person be reasonably secure in their own rights.
