Why is Europe the most developed continent?

Europe was certainly the centre of the world for hundreds, if not thousands of years. It was the Romans who conquered Africa and Asia Minor and before that Alexander The Great conquered from Turkey to India

During the Renaissance it was the centre of science, art, music and all advancements. It was Europe which colonised America and the rest of the world. It was England which forged the largest empire ever seen, not for example the Native Americans.

So what advantage did Europe have over all other continents and civilisations which enabled it to be so? Why didn't Africa have a 'Roman Empire'? Why didn't China colonise France?
