this is because the exams are not held by the schools which used to take place previously. The exams are conducted by the respective boards and the correction is also external. So class 10 and 12 exams are called board exams.

The exams of Tenth are called Board exams because the students are required to give exams under the CBSE Board but earlier it was only limited to their respective schools .
Earlier students had to give their exams in their school but now they give exams in a different school centre which is informed by the CBSE.
