Why is excessive reverberation undesirable?

a1) Because then there is no clarity of sound. just imaine sitting in a hall with excessive reverberation and no sound absorbant materials aroun.....you wont be able to understand a thing!

a2) not so sure about the materials(i guess they are really thick ones....like the ones used for carpets or curtains or rugs) but they are used for the purpose of sound absorbing so the audience can hear clearly.
