the fog produced on the coast is called 'advection fog' and occurs when moist air from the Pacific ocean moves over the cold California current. during the winter months,dense fog episodes can last for days. the thick fog limits solar heating during the day temperatures may only rise 1 or 2 degrees.

Fog is commonly formed in the winter season because -

• The fog is created when the atmospheric water vapour gets condensed into small water drops which floats in the air in the form of fog.

• Now,the condensation process needs a cold atmosphere to perform it's gas to liquid conversion. (Opposite process of liquid to gas conversion which needs hot atmosphere)

• And we all know that in the winter season,the temperature is naturally colder than other seasons. That's why winter is the most accurate season for the formation of the fog.
