Food security is defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO ) as: when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
Food security means availability, accessibility and affordability offood to all people at all times.
Our government since Independence realised the need to attain self-sufficiency in food grains because India experienced acute shortage of foodgrains after partition of the country in 1947. The need for self-sufficiency arises from the
following :
(a) to feed rising population (b) to fight against droughts, floods, cyclone, etc.
(c) to reduce import of food grains (d) to control prices of food grains.
