An essential aspect of the mind is its capacity to feel – so essential that Sri Aurobindo calls it ‘the vital’. The vital is drawn to what is glamorous, what feels good; to glitter, rather than gold. That is why, man is attracted to delicious food, physical comforts, and a variety of thrills and excitements. Having experienced some of these fleeting pleasures, man gets attached to them. He wants more and more of the same, all the time. His happiness comes to depend on them. Attachment leads to dependence, and is therefore bondage. Realizing the fragile and fleeting character of the futile objects to which man is attached, wise men down the ages have recommended detachment from objects of desire as the key to lasting happiness. Detachment is freedom.
