We need to give a force to do work or move an object, ok. So if someone opposes or gives a force opposite as of yours is he helping you or rather defeating the cause of moving the object. Similarly friction opposes motion imparted to a body, thus to maintain the velocity you need to keep applying a force thus its considered as nessacery evil ( yeah nessacery)
After all you need someone to stop you or you will keep moving forever or you could not walk or run. That's All.
