Why is Gambusia introduced into drains and ponds?

Gambusia is a kind of fish that preys upon the larvae of mosquitoes. It is therefore introduced into the drains and ponds. To feed on Mosquito larvae / to eliminate the vectors responsible for causing malaria. It thus helps in controlling malaria.
