The Godavari River is known as 'Dakshina Ganga' i.e. “River Ganga of South India”. River Godavari is the largest river of the south India. It forms the largest river basin in the peninsula, as the Ganga in the north.

River Godavari is also called dakshin Ganga as it's the largest river of peninsular - It is the lengthiest river, many tributaries penganga we Ganga, indravati, Sabari etc. Many states share Water like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, telengana and Andhra //Pradesh.so in that respect also it's like our most revered river Ganga. Another aspect is that the river flows through an eroded landscape of peninsular India which is also called the Gondwana land or mostly Deccan plateau . Therefore people not only call it dakshin Ganga but also vriddha Ganga.(possibly old Ganga of times yore). Maybe when the river was young and landscape/topology of land was younger still.

Also it's revered like Ganga religiously by Hindus( religious places) . Agricultural importance in paddy cultivation cannot be denied either. So many reasons one river.( Namami dakshin Gange)
